Who Trains the AI?

Your AI is conceived as a research-driven exhibit connecting machine learning in image recognition with human behavior in a direct, hands-on way. The installation explores what happens when an unfamiliar AI is actively taught in public: how instructions are interpreted, how carefully rules are followed, and how reliable the system appears once it starts learning.

The exhibit consists of two physical stations, each with a bright, evenly lit surface where objects are placed and captured by a camera. The first station presents a prompt generated by the AI, requesting a specific object to be placed on the platform. Requested items can be entirely ordinary, but the situation can shift toward more sensitive choices, such as an ID card or a bank card. This tension is intentional: it highlights how quickly curiosity, trust, and compliance shape interaction with a largely opaque system. The second station removes the prompt entirely. Objects are placed without instruction, and the AI attempts to identify them based on what has been learned so far, revealing patterns, gaps, and inconsistencies in the training process.

Both stations exchange their learning data at regular intervals, creating a shared pool of knowledge. Built with p5.js and ml5.js, the setup allows the exhibit to highlight not only what the AI knows, but how that knowledge is produced: through selection, repetition, and small decisions made during teaching.
